Only one name resonates on the fervent tongues of South Indian movie-goers- Rajinikanth! He is an indispensable entity of Tamilian culture and in some parts is even worshipped as a graven image. He emanates an aura like no other movie star.  And with his latest movie Kabali being released, the ardor amongst his fans had become almost contagious. This movie certainly does take Bollywood for a pugnacious spin, surpassing and breaking all box office records that has ever been set by the largest film industry in the world. And that’s no small feat!

His swagger is contagious!

Some theatres in Bangalore were charging up to Rs 500 per ticket to get to watch the Super Star in action. First day shows had been booked days in advance, the craze was rampant across South India. There was loud whistling every time Rajini was on screen, or should I call it a pulsating pandemonium? The spirit shown by his fans is matched by none other – His movie releases and then its celebration time all around!

Worshipped all around South India!

The movie revolves around a gang-leader who is released from jail after 25 years and the battle to get his life back. Flashbacks unravel why he was jailed in the first place, the action sequences leave you on the edge of your seats and Rajini does Kabaleeswaran’s characterization quite eloquently. I don’t want to reveal too much, catch the action on the big screen!

Give it a watch!

The enthusiasm and devotion for Rajinikanth is what makes him such a huge South Indian icon. The craze is so ubiquitous in Bangalore, that even non-Tamilians are eager to watch the flick. In some places, Kabali has been released in Hindi, but per Tamilians – Its only Tamil that brings out the true essence of Rajinikanth!

I  do wish sometimes that Bollywood had an icon, an unprecedented persona like Rajinikanth. Perhaps it’s Amitabh Bachchan, as some say. But in the face of it all stands Rajini with a humble smile as millions of people cheer with adulation.  The biggest, most-loved, and not to mention highest paid superstar in Asia, the one and only Rajinikanth!
