With the trend of technology escalating in the city, most of us prefer to stay put indoors over playing out in nature. This has not only hampered the growth of adults, but has also had found its way to hinder the lifestyle of the children. Children of this generation have not experienced what it feels like to climb trees or play with mud or spot the different butterflies in the garden. But here’s a smart solution!

1. SMArt - The Studio for Movement Arts & Therapies

The Studio for Movement Arts & Therapies (SMArT) founded by Brinda Jacob-Janvrin at Ulsoor was established in August 2008 with the intention of bringing diverse artistes together to share and create a new experience in movement. The SMArT studio organises workshops and training programs for the public to raise awareness about various forms of art therapy. The studio also provides 20-hour workshops for different age groups on dance, theatre, photography, visual art, film-making and expressive arts therapy.

The upcoming event, Bogase Tumba Aakasha, translates to “a handful of sky and the earth.” Led by 3 facilitators, around 12 children from the ages 5-8 are going to present a breathtaking skit based on the importance of the environment in the city. The SMArT studio got children to plant mustard seeds, make collages and explore Ulsoor Lake the previous day.

One of the parents who came to pick his daughters up after class was delighted to share his thoughts about this innovative studio. “My daughters have been coming here for the past 10 months and I have noticed one of them is a lot less hesitant when it comes to social activities.”

Meredith Starkman, an actress by profession, has worked with communities and organised a number of street plays for children in the past 7 years. “I have been here at SMArT for just about a month now. The amazing environmental activities we do here is relevant to the learning processes a child must have,” says Meredith. “I love working with children because they are creative and spontaneous,” she added.

Padma, a documentary film-maker by profession, is one of the facilitators here at SMArT. She specialises in theatre and expressive arts and has worked with children for the past 6-7 years. “I believe every child should have an immediate connection with the environment,” says Padma.
A lot of nature connect programs are sprouting in the city. There is a new hope growing. So come join the green crusade!
