Owned and maintained by the most prestigious family of Hindi film industry, the Kapoors, Prithvi Theatre is always bustling with those interested in the performing arts. It all started in 1944, when the great actor Prithviraj Kapoor found ‘Prithvi Theatres’, a travelling company which ran for sixteen years. Later, his son, Shashi Kapoor decided to build Prithvi Theatre in the memory of Prithviraj Kapoor, giving a permanent abode to the travelling company. Thus in the year 1978, this well- known theatre was established to promote professional theatricals.
Since its inception, Prithvi Theatre has been providing and maintaining a fully equipped theatre space with every possible technical facility being easily available. The theatre is a complete non-profit entity which it makes it accessible to all at very affordable costs. However its non-profit approach does not hinder it to generate thriving income to maintain the place.
The theatre has been reputed for hosting famous artists like Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah and many others stalwart of theatre. The Prithvi Festival attracts a number of people towards this place.
Other than plays, Prithvi Theatre is also one of the favorite venues for other performing arts like dance, music, and open mic sessions and provides space for rehearsals as well. It also hosts regular workshops for acting, especially during summers for young and budding school-going actors.
The primary agenda of Prithvi Theatre is to promote aspiring stage artists, technicians and others and it won’t be erroneous to say that it has been quite successful in achieving this, over the years. It is an ideal place for artists, students and theatre enthusiasts to meet and interact with one- another.
