Also known as Muranjan, Prabalgad Fort is located between Matheran and Panvel, just about 46 Kilometers from Mumbai. As one of the oldest forms of architecture, the fort is one of the most popular tourist spots an is also among the top destinations for trekking near Mumbai.
The fort has a Ganesha temple and is off the old stone ruins. At an elevation of 2300 ft, the fort was built close Matheran, the neighbouring hill to Prabalgad. From the highest point at Prabalgad, one can catch a panoramic view of the Kalavantin Ghad that is also at a similar height and makes for a great weekend getaway.
Prabalgad machi is the base village for all the treks nearby including the Prabalgad trek. The fort is a dense green stretch which would require proper guide who has knowledge about the surroundings.The Kalavantin Peak view point is one of the most important spots along the trek.
The 3 hour trek shows great views of some of the most scenic spots. The Ulahas River, Chanderi and Peb forts, the Karnala fort, Patalganga River, Kala Buruj, Kalvantin fort are a few that you will be coming across while on a trek to the Prabalgad fort. This place is also one of great spots for avid trekkers and nature lovers alike. As this place also not very far away from the city, the spot serves as a perfectly quick weekend getaway.
How to get there?
1) Drive down to Thakurwadi (from Shedung phata – Kalamboli-Mumbai bypass road meets the Mumbai-Pune highway)
2) Take a bus from Panvel to Thakurwadi
3) From Thakurwadi walk to base village, Prabal Machi
