Mumbai has been called the city that never sleeps. It is a hub of activity of all sorts. Commerce, entertainment, business, showbiz, parties, etc. all find a spot in this spectacle of a city. As such, every big name in business wants to have a presence in Mumbai. Having a flagship store in the city is not just a matter of pride, it has now become an absolute necessity. With some of the best shops and malls being constructed there, Mumbai is where everything seems to be happening. The downside of this is that the city is running of space. Every city has a limited amount of land to work with, and with the amount of development that Mumbai sees every year, that amount is dwindling quickly. Which is why an initiative like the Bandra Kurla Complex is nothing short of a godsend. The Bandra Kurla Complex is a planned commercial complex in Mumbai that is designed to give the city some much needed breathing room by becoming a grown centre for offices and commercial building in the south of Mumbai. Housing several world renowned companies, the Bandra Kurla Complex has become the epitome of business excellence in Mumbai.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had sanctioned the making of the Bandra Kurla in 1997, when it was appointed as the special planning authority for planning and developing the project. Since then, several improvements have been made to the area in when the Bandra Kurla Complex now stands. This was previously a low-lying land in the bank of the river Mithi. It was poorly developed, with no proper drainage and heavy pollution. The Mithi river had to be channeled in order to reduce pollution and put the water to proper use. Once this was done, the work on the Bandra Kurla Complex could begin in earnest. While the Bandra Kurla Complex is already providing jobs to hundreds and thousands of people, it is estimated that the complex will generate around 2,000,000 jobs when the area is fully developed.

Since the Bandra Kurla Complex has such a huge number of people, working in the many commercial complexes it houses, there needs to be some places that provide an opportunity for relaxation and refreshment. Which is why the complex is studded with some of the best restaurants, pubs and clubs in the city. Establishments such as Drinkery 51, Peninsula, Chilli’s, SodaBottleOpenerWala, Café Coffee Day and Starbucks are just a few examples of the many excellent places that the complex has.

There are several open grounds in the Bandra Kurla Complex that are used for concerts, exhibitions and other events. These spaces are called the MMRDA Grounds. Some of the greatest names in music, such as A.R Rahman, Coldplay, Guns N’ Roses, Jay-Z and Bryan Adams have performed on these grounds.
While the Bandra Kurla Complex was designed as an office and commercial space, there is no doubt that is has become an intrinsic part of the city’s cultural landscape as well. With more development along the way, the Bandra Kurla Complex is redefining how we look at business and culture.
