Book Launch and Discussion Of B3/703, Gulmohar Park by Mini Sukumaran Nair Saturday, December 9: 11.00 am- 12.00 noon. Pagdandi Book Chai Cafe invites you to a conversation over tea on Saturday, 9th December 2017, 11.00 am to 12.00 noon. Mini Sukumaran Nair will be in conversation with Rashmi Tamuly, Social Work Educator, Consultant and Counselor. Set in the windy textile city of Southern India, Coimbatore, B3/703, Gulmohar Park witnesses the journey of a five year old child, Madhura as she battles with loneliness and despair. Over Tea and some Rose Coloured Cake, purely inspired from the book, B3/703, Gulmohar Park, the Author will reflect on the issues of longing and belonging, faith and fact; in a world which is perpetually caught up in the complex web of colour and class, boundaries and blood. Suitable for young adults and old, B3/703, Gulmohar Park will take you close to the existing legal framework for Juvenile Justice and the laws for the children under custodial care. The discussion will throw some light at the life and everyday struggle of domestic helpers in India and will open a little window to peep into the life of their young children. Do join us for an engaging and reflective tea morning.

From the time he was a boy living with his grandparents in Dehra, surrounded by an assortment of odd animals, people and relatives, to when he gets sent away to school, then makes his way to London and becomes a writer, Rusty's had more adventures than we can count.

The Adventures of Rusty contains his best, funniest, most exciting escapades. In these pages there's Toto, the monkey that travelled in a bag in a train; an encounter with a leopard; life as a young writer in faraway London; and the return home to roots that were always loved and never forgotten.

In 1982, having sold his jazz bar to devote himself to writing, Murakami began running to keep fit. A year later, he'd completed a solo course from Athens to Marathon, and now, after dozens of such races, he reflects upon the influence the sport has had on his life and on his writing.

Equal parts travelogue, training log, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers his four- month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon and settings ranging from Tokyo's Jingu Gaien gardens, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston.

This is a must read for and of this masterful yet private writer as well as for the exploding population of athletes who find similar satisfaction in distance running.

The intelligent and outspoken child of radical Marxists, and the great- granddaughter of Iran's last emperor Satrapi, bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country. Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life. This is a beautiful and intimate story full of tragedy and humour- raw, honest and incredibly illuminating.

Saroja and Kumaresan are in love. After a hasty wedding, they arrive in Kumaresan's village, harbouring the dangerous secret that theirs is an intercaste marriage, likely to anger the villagers should they learn of it. Kumaresan is confident that all will be well. He naively believes that after the initial round of curious questions, the inquiries will die down and the couple will be left alone. But nothing is further from the truth. The villagers strongly suspect that Saroja must belong to a different caste. It is only a matter of time before their suspicions harden into certainty and, outraged, they set about exacting their revenge.

With spare, powerful prose, Murugan masterfully conjures a terrifying vision of intolerance in this devastating tale of innocent young love pitted against child savagery.

This novella from Norway tells the story of a teenage girl who is torn from her home in Argentina and is then, more or less, abandoned by her parents to struggle alone in the harsh climate of England. While her father is away fighting in a war and her mother lives and works in London, Lynette has to fend for herself and take care of her younger siblings. At the same time, she has to deal with the difficult emotion of love for a boy who too goes away to fight as a soldier in a war that continues for years.

It was primarily opium that linked Bombay to the international capitalist economy and the western Indian hinterland in the nineteenth century. The essays in this book explore the linkages between the opium enterprise of western India and the creation of early Victorian Bombay. They dwell on some of the prominent features of urban development which reflect the relationship of collaboration and conflict between the capitalist class of the city and British colonial rule. They show opium as the crucial factor in the emergence of Bombay as a metropolis.

Walter Mitty remains silent. He has no words to express his frustration. His entire endeavour to find Sean OConnell, the great photographer is pointless now. The realisation that the picture he was searching with all his might is now gone, making him depressed. A few small talks later, Sean doesn't amaze him anymore. Suddenly Sean stops Walter in the middle of the conversation and asks him to look into the lens- A snow leopard, one of the rarest of all animals. Walter is left in awe of the majestic animal. He moves away from the lens and exchanges a look with Sean, just to find a joy filled smile on his face like an innocent kid. He was so relaxed that he leaned on the rock behind. His mind is racing with questions about why Sean is not photographing them? Sean has been waiting to catch a glimpse of these creatures so eagerly and and now he is calm. Perplexed by Sean's attitude Walter inquires, "When are you going to take it?" To which, he replies, "Sometimes I don't. When I feel like being in the moment and not have the distraction of a camera. So I stay IN IT."

-A scene from the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

It took me few years to understand what Sean O'Connell meant. I started photography as a hobby and as an outlet for my creativity in 2011. Back then I used to point my camera almost at anything and everything vibrant colours, lights and vivid imagery. Street photography became my forte as it was easy to find a subject. I was eager to express my creativity. And then my first Himalayan trip happened in 2014 and the following year I took an expedition to Antarctica that changed my attitude towards photography. I realised that my skills behind the lens are nothing compared to the beauty of nature. Being awestricken by the beauty of natural world I started nature and wildlife photography. These pictures are my gratitude towards mother nature. A humble appreciation of the beauty in the world. The photographs presented here are the scenes that compelled me to pick up my camera and share it with the world. They are not the best sceneries I have experienced as in those moments I felt like immersing myself in them than taking pictures. It's an experience which cannot be justified by a series of pictures. These pictures are my best efforts to inspire you to experience scenic beauty. Being an appreciator of mother nature, I wish you too fall in love with it again like I have.
