It is among the oldest of the sciences. Over the centuries from Linnaeus’ work on taxonomy, it has undergone many changes in avatar, perpetually transforming our understanding of the natural world and natural phenomena. In this talk, I will outline how modern technology has resulted in exciting new advances in the study of birds, coupled with a revival of classical forms of study such as natural history collections. The talk will also stress upon what we can learn from the behaviour and natural history of these fascinating animals.

About the speaker:

Anand Krishnan is a DST-INSPIRE Faculty Fellow at the IISER, Pune. Trained as a comparative neurobiologist, he obtained his Ph.D from the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bengaluru studying hawk moths and did his postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University studying bats. His current research uses acoustics to study the behaviour, ecology and evolution of bird diversity, with a broad interest in acoustic communication across animals.
