About the Place
Nestled in the southwest part of Gujarat state, 360 kilometres from Ahmedabad, 65 kilometres from Junagadh, and 40 kilometres from Veraval is the Gir National Park. The Gir National Park is located on an island from the beaches of Diu. The entrance to the park is at Sasan Gir village, here is where the park reception and orientation centre is (next to the forest department's official Sinh Sadan guesthouse). Gir Forest National Park is the only such place in the world where rare lions have survived.
Going back in history, The Gir National Forest area was first protected by the Nawab of the princely state of Junagadh. This was during the 20th century where the Nawab of the princely state of Junagadh protected the Gir Forest area and the Asiatic lions. By taking this action, the population of the lions were saved from being extinct as a result of trophy hunting. Then finally years later in 1965, the Gir National Park was established. There is a beautiful dam named Kameshwar Dam in the middle of the sanctuary and it is home to many marsh crocodiles. This is a place which you must not miss.
Later in the year 2005, just ‘52’ Asiatic Lions were found in the wild. The fear of extinction raised again but then due to conversational efforts, the population of the Asiatic Lions increased by time with more than 500 Asiatic Lions living at The Gir Forest today. The Gir National Park trip would be a visit that will render wonderful sightings and give you thrills.
