Waacking is a dance form which has its roots back in the 1970s in the disco gay clubs of Los Angeles, California. To understand this style and the intention behind it, it is vital to understand the social stigma attached to being “gay”.
Back then, The LGBTQIA community had just broke out full fledgedly and hence, wasn’t accepted by the mainstream society. It was almost impossible for them to get the same status and acceptance as and by the straight community. To provoke them, the communities around them, started using the term “punk” meaning a someone used as a homosexual partner in prison or inferior and bad. This was a derogatory term or a slang which was used to demean them and make feel that they were inferior to others.
As it crossed their thresholds, the queer community chose the disco clubs as a medium to channelise their oppression and to fight the marginalisation drawn by the community. This, they chose dance as a medium of storytelling and that’s how the style was actually born. Thus, they used “punking” as their strength and a form of expression towards the prejudiced stigmas of the society. “Waacking” the term, as we use it now, got its name from the batman and robin series in the 1960s where there were several onomatopoeias used to express the action and “whack” was one of them! Thus, the straight community soon began to fall in love with this dance form as they started watching the show “soul train” (which had all the original punkers in it) and soon started understanding the culture of it. But, they did not want to associate with the homosexual term of punking and that’s how “whacking” was coined. This is how this style got its actual name. Thus, waacking is the action and punking is the emotion of the action. This is how waacking Is understood.
Waacking has been one of the most widespread dance forms now and is done all over the world now.
About the workshop:
Dancing itself is an emotional and physical therapy. It puts one's soul, body and mind in sync. I’m looking forward to make people experience that through my style - Waacking.
