Why we Edit!

Wikimedias gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

Lets change that. Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and refreshments }.

IMPORTANT: Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. (Please note you cannot edit articles via tablets and mobile phones!)

People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate! See you on Saturday.

Sunayani Devi is known more popularly known as the niece of Rabindranath Tagore; sister to Abanindranath and Gaganendranath Tagore; wife of Raja Ram Mohan Roy's grandson. At a time when women were confined within the walls of domesticity, Sunayini Devi - a self-taught artist broke barriers and painted; beginning at the age of 30. She went on to establish the art school "Kala Bharti" in Calcutta as well.

Unfortunately, the internet tells us only that much about her and she doesn't feature on Wikipedia yet - limiting knowledge about her in the global arts space.

Learn about Sunayani Devi's art and join us in writing about her at the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Editathon at Piramal Museum of Art, Mumbai. Claim your free-spot here: bit.ly/AFIndia

Fixing Wikipedia's male bias - With a delayed start, Indians are now fixing the inherent bias at the go-to site, which has more pages on men than women, and far more male editors than women

There's no information on the internet on someone like her. http://bit.ly/AFIndia Register for a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon at the Govt. Museum in Chandigarh on 09 April, 2017 and help us create content on iconic women in the arts! Ahem, there are surprise gifts for the best editors !!!!

"Jaya Appaswamy, renowned artist, art historian and art critic brought tremendous changes in the field of art criticism, art journalism and art history. She was one silent performer in the discourse on the Modern Indian art scene. As the editor of Lalit Kala Contemporary (the only journal for contemporary art at that time), she not only managed to chronicle the developments in modern Indian art through artists statements and different scholarly articles but was also actively involved in the publications of small monographs of the artists through the Lalit Kala Akademi. People who knew her personally fondly remember her as a person who loved to activate discussions and initiate people into ideating and writing"
