This is a 6-week hands-on course for adults on film-making that will create a solid foundation in all the skill areas involved in making a film using accessible equipment. We want to let the participants tell their own stories will put the tools and skills in their hands to let them express themselves. The course will unlock their thinking by showing them what’s possible with the resources they have or can access- all with proper pre-planning. By the end of this module, you will be able to go and make a short film using easily accessible equipment, locations, participants and software.

Each participant will have the chance to make a short 3-5 minute film of their own- written and directed by them. The course will have both a theoretical and practical aspect with emphasis on hands-on learning. It is an involved short programme for enthusiastic beginners wanting an introduction to storytelling through the visual medium of film.

The Emphasis of the Workshop

Impart the key development structure of Ideation > Preparation > Execution > Finalisation where we go through the stages of

- Conceiving a story worth telling visually

- Marshalling the resources and requirements to put it on film

- Filming and getting the coverage we want

- Editing, grading and presentation

Course Outline

1. Introduction to all the principal elements of film-making.

- Scriptwriting – ideation, drama, twists, genre

- Cinematography – shot selection, coverage, techniques

- Directing – working with the script/ actors/ DoP

-Editing – Creating flow and impact, giving shape to the story.

2. Individual Project preparation

- Preparing a script/ storyboard

- Location, actors and prop needs

- Rehearsals with actors

3. Making Films

- Shooting in groups of 4/5

- Each student helps the others with their films- performing all the roles of director, assistants, actors as required

4. The Editing Process

- Working alongside a professional editor to finish your film to a presentable final work.

5. Displaying the work

- A Film Screening for friends

- Upload on to a Youtube channel
