Ink wash painting is originally from China and it flourished in Japan after it was introduced by Zen Buddhist monks in the 14th century. It is a form of painting which uses varied shades of black giving an emphasis on the brushwork and the perceived "spirit" or "essence" of a subject over direct imitation. It went hand in hand with the East Asian Calligraphy artists who used this method to illustrate their beautiful writing on the paper scrolls.
As explained by the artist...
"Paintings in black ink are called Sumie in Japan. Sumie uses only black ink. It has various techniques of shading and gradation which can be achieved through changing the amount of water added to the ink.
For Sumie artists the "beauty of blank space" is very important, perhaps more important than the object itself. In Sumie, the white space or emptiness completes the painting. Like any art form it is deeply rooted in Zen, embodying many of the tenets of the Zen finding beauty in blank space."
For this workshop we'll be working on a paper to create flowers, abstract and landscape with different tones of the Black Ink, learning the technique of shading and pressure within a single brushstroke! Look forward to exploring it together and welcoming everyone's Zen side!!
