About the play (TELEPHONE)

The play is an adaptation of a short story by the Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, "I Only Came to Use the Phone" which was published in 1992 in an anthology of stories, Strange Pilgrims.

The story is set in the late 1960's and revolves around Maria who is returning to her home after a short vacation at her granny's house in a small town when her car breaks down. Desperate to call her husband, the magician David, she hitches a ride on a decrepit bus and is deposited in a mental asylum, where she is accidentally admitted.

The Head of the asylum persuades Maria that she is in fact mentally ill and is too dangerous to ever leave; something the woman herself begins to believe, the longer she stays there. While Maria struggles to prove her identity and sanity to the disbelieving asylum staff, her husband assumes she has run away with another man and his magic act falls into ruin without her.
Will she be ever able to be free herself from this asylum? The question remains unanswered.

About the play: (THE JOB)

Each home houses a window. This window allows one to take a look at the outside world while opening its doors to the world within.
War is another name for this window, through the passage of which one can travel to the public and the domestic space.

Our protagonist in the journey of her story, amidst the chaos of war outside and within, sets out to find a middle ground between the spaces created by society. The dilemma of whether she finds a personal space or gets shackled in fetters of a different kind lurks.

As the story progresses a pertinent question comes to fore.
Feminine!
Masculine!
Why should the world be divided into two?
