Hi Makers!

Ganesh Chathurthi is a day to worship the soil in the form of an idol of Lord Ganapathy. In most regions, this is either before or after the monsoon, just ahead of the sowing season. India being a primarily agricultural country for centuries, most traditions surround the prayer to the earth that provides us with food.

In today's urban scenario, we use fuel to transport lake bed clay from a rural landscape to the city and then immerse the idol in the sea. This is just a blatant form of soil erosion. Clay doesn't belong in the sea. Neither do paints, plastic, glitter, thermocol, garlands and loads of other trash. If you are someone who cares about the environment, you will probably look for an Eco-friendly Ganesha. Instead of getting mixed up in the -whirlpool of consumerism and choosing a well-marketed expensive product, let's explore what "Eco-friendly" really means and make our own truly ZERO WASTE Ganesha idol, not with the clay of course.

In this workshop, you will learn to sculpt an idol out of red garden soil with the use of different natural binding elements. You will get to understand the materials, connect with them and experiment to see how the different ingredients work in different proportions. You will also be making Eco-friendly umbrellas and painting the idols with natural colors. This workshop is not merely about putting your sculpting skills to test. It will be focused on the knowledge of materials, which will allow you to experiment with different proportions and ingredients by yourself in the future and also spread the knowledge to others.

This is a totally hands-on workshop. Get ready to make your hands dirty.
Avoiding light-colored or high-quality clothing is recommended.
If possible, bring a basket, or bag with a flat base to carry home your Ganesha safely.

What will actually happen there?
You will be taught to sculpt with soil using different binding agents and finish the Ganesha idol with natural colors.

What if I'm not good at sculpting or painting?
The beauty lies in your effort to make an earth-friendly idol.

Everyone will get an individual Ganesha?
Yes, everyone can sculpt and take home their own unique Ganesha. Or you can choose to sculpt anything you want.

Should I bring any materials?
No, but it would be convenient for you to make arrangements to carry home your Ganesha safely.
