Joining the revolution of the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) movement, Young-Scientist.in is presenting a workshop for kids in the physics of flying with a hands-on approach. This will be achieved through the building of model gliders using paper and foam. The participants will be provided with the necessary materials and carefully guided to build their own gliders using their own hands.
The workshop will help you understand basic aerodynamics and the design of a glider. It will also serve as an introduction to production engineering and a training in technical instructions. By the end, you will have gained the confidence to fabricate working models of basic gliders.
Eligibility: Classes V to X.
Tentative list of gliders built:
Marlin Paper Airplane
Check out John Collins, the current world record holder for creating the paper aeroplane that flew the longest distance. To achieve this feat he studied origami for 10 years, after spending years perfecting paper gliders.
Current Record for Distance: 226 feet and 10 inches
Benefits of making paper gliders
Since this process is a subset of origami, the mental and health benefits are numerous. To list a few skills that this workshop will focus on:
"Give your son a fish, he will eat today. Teach him how to fish, he will eat every day" is a proverb that encapsulates the spirit of Do-It-Yourself and this workshop. We want to provide your child with the confidence and skills to materialise what they imagine- starting from simple models. If a child feels empowered, he or she will grow to be an independent and self-sufficient person.
