Come join us for an evening of Dhrupad through the Rudraveena with Murali Mohana Gowda and Madhuvanti Murali.

The Rudraveena is the mother of all stringed instruments, sustaining largely in its current state and form for at least 1200 years, and yet dynamically evolving to remain contemporary without compromising on its core values. it is the instument that was played by the Rishi-Munis(Saint-Researchers) of yore for the attainment of Shruti Gyana(Knowledge of subtle musical nuances) as a journey towards the pursuit of Moksha Salvation). Rudraveena was very popular until the Mogul Period and started to decline afterwards because of slow and meditative nature, its huge size and the tremendous practice it demands.

Murali is one of the very few Rudraveena players in the country who is professionally pursuing it in the Dhrupad style of Indian music. He was fortunate enough to have been accepted into the Gurukul, Dhrupad Sansthan in Bhopal, being run by the world-renowned Dhrupad artists Padmashri Gundecha Brothers to learn under the Guru-Shishya Parampara model of training. He also has the fortune of receiving in depth training, specific to the techniques of the Rudraveena from Pandit Asit Kumar Banerjee, Kolkata and Pandit Rajashekhar Vyas, Udaipur.

Other Projects
Murali Undertook a research project on the instruments used in Indian Classical and Semi-Classical Music which are going out of vogue and he was appointed as a consultant by Sir Dorabji Tata
Trust, it involved travelling all over India and interviewing the artists as well as the Instrument Makers.. the Project was Successfully completed in October 2015. In November 2015 he organised a
mega event called SMARAN which was intended to bring together the entire legacy of Ustad ZM Dagar and Usatd ZF Dagar, Dhrupad artists at one place. the objective was to create platform for the young aspiring students to not only learn from all the practioners of this rare traditional art but also create space for interaction between them. In October 2016, he collaborated with the accomplished classical and contemporary Dancer Veeena Basavarajaih in Art-in Transit Festival. The objective of this experiments to break traditional barriers that make us blind towards Devadasi System. In May 2017, He initiated a House concert Series named TARANGA which intends to provide platform to artists from various backgrounds which has completed six editions so far.

MadhuvantiPal is an established Multi-Instrumentalist, Painter,Model and a Fashion designer who lives in Kolkata, India. She was initiated into Indian classical music at the age of 12 in the form of Kheyal singing. She was later trained under an accomplished master of Violin, Indradeep Gosh of Maihar for 5 years. As she grew in her career as a violinist , she felt a strong inclination towards Rudraveena and started looking for a Guru. Since she was not from the musical background, there was no one to guide her properly. In the year 2012, she started learning from the legend, Vidushi Mita Nag, the Daughter of legendary sitarist Pandi t Mani Lal Nag of BIshnupur GHarana. Unlike her peers Madhuvanti was given a special t raining, which involved the intricacies of Bishnupur Rudraveena, Bolbani , Laykar is and rare Ragas, which are the prominent features of Bishnupur Gharana. Meanwhile she received talim from Pandit Mrityunjay Mukherjee on Indian f lute (Bansuri ) , making her the only woman Bass Flutist of
India. At the peak of her career as a Musician and a Model , with the encouragement of Vidushi Mita Nag and Pandit Mrityunjay Mukherjee , she got her first veena made in kolkata, which unfortunately
was not up to the mark. Tired of struggling with the bad instrument , she decided to set out on a journey to build her own Veena, which took her to Udaipur and Bhopal . Under the guidance of Pandit Rajshekar Vyas she made her first veena that was made of bamboo. She currently receives t raining from the world renowned masters of Dhrupad, Padmashri Gundecha Brothers as well . Later with a lot of research, contemplation and enquiry she built a Rudraveena that is capable of producing quality music, without compromising the conveniences of the player . Madhuvanti is the only female Rudraveena maker inIndia Madhuvanti , also teaches Indian classical music, some of her students are already established as professional musicians.
