Strii is a bold, explorative dance-drama (18 plus only), set to challenge traditional representations of the female protagonists of one of India's greatest epics - the Mahabharat.

Prominent city-based, Bellydance artistes, Shruti Narayanan, Meghana Suresh, and Pooja Rajpurohit are coming together in a collaborative effort to essay the roles of Draupadi, Gandhari and Kunti. The dance-drama will use various dance vocabularies such as modern, contemporary and folkloric Bellydance styles, organic bodywork and prop work

The artistes are going to individually present a reconstruction of important events from the lives of the queens while using a strong female voice and exploring the concept of "Abhinaya" (the art of storytelling) as a legitimate space within Bellydance.

Through the 75-minute  production, the artistes are hoping to start a conversation on women in India, while highlighting pertinent issues such as marital rape, single parenting, sacrifices, and forsaken love, family honor, etc.

About the Artistes:

Shruti Narayanan -

Strii is the brainchild of Bangalore based Bellydance artiste, instructor, and performer - Shruti Narayanan. This is Shruti's 4th dance/Bellydance production. A trained bellydancer and Bharatnatyam exponent (Kalakshetra) with 9 and 10 years to her credit, respectively, Shruti is known for her research-driven, dance work. Her first three Bellydance productions were - Oriental Trail, Oriental Trail 2.0 and Vintage Lounge.

Meghana Suresh -

Meghana has been dancing since the age of 4 and has had training in Bharatnatyam, contemporary, and freestyle forms of dance. She started her Bellydance training in the year 2010 and has since been dedicatedly pursuing the same as an instructor, choreographer, and performer. A staunch believer in having a research-based approach to understanding and learning Bellydance, Meghana also loves working with props and incorporating movements from varied dance repertoire into her choreographies.

Pooja Rajpurohit

Pooja Rajpurohit is a Bangalore-based dancer who is trained in multiple styles of dance including Bellydance, jazz and hip hop to name a few. Versatility is what she believes in and attempts connecting different styles for a deeper understanding. She is also one of the few Zumba Jammers of India.
