Why Total Music Production Diploma:

The objective of The Total Music Production Diploma by The Open Music School (T.O.M.S) and Artkhoj is to fast-forward your learning in the field of writing, composing, arranging, producing and publishing music. This intensive-learning two-month diploma workshop will cover aspects right from planning out the song structure, chords, instruments used and the musical orchestrations all the way up to recording, mixing, mastering and publishing your work.

You may be an aspiring full-time music producer, you may be a semi-professional looking to push your production or mixing game to the next level or you may even be a passionate hobbyist - this course is tailor-made for all of the above.

About the Course:

Over the span of 8 weekends, the participants of the workshop will be tasked to make and compose music, deconstruct songs and analyze the structures and sub-genres, record programmed and live instruments; edit, mix and master the recordings while they get hands-on training on the digital audio workstation (DAW) and train to use industry standard plug-ins and software.
This diploma is a one-stop for music production where you'll learn to communicate with artists, work around your client's budgets, get a good understanding of copyrights and patents, understand the social-media game and publishing your work, building a resume and thriving in the business as a full-time producer.
The course also includes the basics of the piano - learning chords and understanding music theory to understand your compositions or your client's projects better.
It also covers key aspects like acoustic treatment, programmed instruments versus live instruments, sample replacements and so on.
This course thrives on the possibility of the evening the playing field between a producer who has access to a multi-million dollar studio against a producer whos making music from his or her bedroom studio.

Structure of the Course:

  1. Pre-production:

  • Understanding the artist's vision for the song.
  • Identifying the genre and sub-genre and understanding the different musical parameters and guidelines to work more efficiently within and around the genre. 
  • Working around a budget. 
  • Preparing a gear/equipment list. 
  • Deciding between programmed and recorded instruments. 
  • Alternate versions for the song. 
  • Identifying and auditioning the tempo for the song. 
  • Finalizing on patches, tones, microphones, mic placements, drum tunings, etc. 
  • Setting up and getting started on the DAW (digital audio workstation) 
  • Scratch tracks and reference tracks.

  1.  Production:

  • Basics of the keyboard (guest teacher) 
  • Learning, understanding and using chords for the melody. (Guest teacher) 
  • Guitar vs piano (guest teacher) 
  • Understanding the concept of layers (guest teacher) 
  • Programmed vs live instruments 
  • Deconstructing songs and analyzing them
  • Working with a melody - refining, improvising, and harmonies. 
  • Recording in a home studio
  • Basics of music theory: part 1 - note values, bars, song sections and the use of a metronome. 
  • Basics of music theory: part 2 - chords, major and minor scales and incorporating them into your songs, inversions, arpeggios. 
  • Advanced production tools - dynamics, transitions, the concept of air, songs journey and connecting the dots.
  • Thinking outside the box - incorporating your everyday sounds (rainfall, door closing, water droplets, traffic, birds chirping, etc.) into your song. 
  • Basics of DAW: part 1 - setting up a project, understanding the tools within the DAW, importing and exporting sound effects, recordings and tones in and out of the DAW, shortcuts. 
  • Basics of DAW: part 2 - cleaning up your session - coloring and naming the tracks, grouping them, removing the unwanted and excess tracks. 
  • Basics of DAW: part 3 - the introduction of plugins (EQ, compression, reverb, delay, saturation, etc.) and sound libraries. 
  • The 30-minute-rule: game changer during rehearsals and recordings. 
  • Production approach when dealing with a full band vs a solo singer-songwriter vs session musicians. 
  • Producing instrumental tracks: part 1 - guitar, piano, percussion. 
  • Producing instrumental tracks: part 2 - electronic dance music (EDM) 

  1.  Post-Production: 

  • Editing - time and pitch corrections, making the session mix-ready, fades. 
  • Mixing - in-depth use of equalization (EQ), compression, saturation, reverb, delay, gates, limiter, expander and many more. 
  • Using groups, busses, and the master fader. 
  • Understanding digital routing and parallel compression. 
  • Using samples - sample replacement and sample enhancement hybrid. 
  • Automation - volume and FX automation 
  • Mastering - EQ, compression, and limiter. Understanding the overall dynamics of the song. 
  • Listening environments - part 1: headphones vs earphones vs monitors. Using reference sound sources. 
  • Listening environments - part 2: understanding acoustics: acoustic treatment for home and professional studios and how to go about it. 
  • Listening environments - part 3: using reference tracks and how to listen to them. 
  • A career as a full-time music producer -  part 1: approaching clients, incentives, building a portfolio, making connections in the local music scene, picking the right clients. 
  • A career as a full-time music producer part 2: working with corporates, understanding the current trends, dealing with copyright issues. 
  • Promotions: using social media to promote your work and your releases, crowdfunding, buy to sell, moving your business online. 
  • Understanding record labels, endorsements and artist managers. 
  • Creating a workflow and a workspace that is efficient and welcoming. 

About the Trainer:

Nikhil Vaidhyanathan is a full-time music producer, sound engineer, acoustic consultant, and multi-percussionist. Nikhil is a certified drummer from the Trinity College of Music, London and holds a diploma in music production from Pointblank, London.
Nikhil has been mentoring passionate musicians for the last 5 years and has personally tutored over 250 students in the field of drums, sound engineering, and music production.

He's had the privilege of sharing the stage with some of the big names in the industry like Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Gaurav Kapoor, SP Balasubramaniam and Shivamani to name a few.

He also had his fair share of background scores, short films, audio production for corporate events (live and pre-produced) and performances at local venues and events as a drummer and sound engineer (Leela Palace, Sunday Soul Sante, Blue Frog, Humming Tree, Casa Picasso, La Marvel and Indigo Live to name a few)
Nikhils goal is to push the envelope in the field of producing, composing, arranging, engineering and performing.
