ABOUT THE POET:

Cole Swensen (born 1955, in Kentfield, California) is an American poet, translator, editor, copywriter, and professor. Swensen was awarded a 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship and is the author of more than ten poetry collections and as many translations of works from the French. She received her B.A. and M.A. from San Francisco State University and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz before going on to become the now-Previous Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Denver. She taught at the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa until 2012 when she joined the faculty of Brown University's Literary Arts Program.

Her work is considered Postmodern and post-Language school, though she maintains close ties with many of the original authors from that group (such as Lyn Hejinian, Carla Harryman, Barrett Watten, Charles Bernstein,) as well as poets from all over the US and Europe. Her work is hybrid in nature, sometimes called lyric-Language poetry emerging from a strong background in the poetic and visual art traditions of both the USA and France and adding to them her own vision.

In the USA, Cole Swensen's ninth collection of poetry, Goest (Alice James Books, 2004) was a finalist for the National Book Award.[1] Earlier works have been awarded a National Poetry Series selection, Sun & Moon's New American Writing Award, the Iowa Poetry Prize via University of Iowa Press, the San Francisco State Poetry Center Book Award, and two Pushcart Prizes. Her translation of Jean Frémon's The Island of the Dead won the 2004 PEN USA Literary Award for Translation. She has also received grants from the Association Beaumarchais and the French Bureau du Livre.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Urban Solace earlier tonight.

Two floors full of little nooks and crannies, odd angles, and small rooms that lead into each other. Not to mention book lined shelves and very unobtrusive background music.

Ideal space to hang out with friends, or solo with a book or two, listening to the steady pitter-patter of the Bangalore drizzle on the roof.

Tonight was special: I attended a screening of 'Ka Bodyscapes', a memorable award-winning film that has done the rounds of international film fests, but cannot be screened publicly in India, owing to the reactionary moralistic censor board.

Certainly, there is plenty of full frontal male nudity to offend the prudish and censorial religio-political elements in Indian culture/(s).

I liked the boldness of the warm, affectionately voyeuristic camera that captured the nude male Indian (Kerala) body from various angles and in different postures.

The main theme of the film is societal and political policing of the body in its oozes, lust, desire and need for self-expression in all senses.

Sia is an outspoken Muslim woman, who challenges the Kerala Islamic patriarchy at work and home, who is physically and verbally abused, for defending menstrual blood as okay (not impure), and for being a feisty protester.

Haris and his model/lover are harassed by the heteropatriarchy and H's paintings are burned publicly by a raving homophobic Hindutva mob.

The film challenges Hindutva (right wing Hindu fundamentalist) patriarchy, as also Muslim patriarchy and their fanatical yearning to police desire and the body.

In spite of a tendency to drag at times, well worth a watch.

Book under review for the month of July 2017- The Ocean of Churn by Sanjeev Sanyal

About the Book: The Ocean of Churn

Much of human history has played itself out along the rim of the Indian Ocean. In a first-of-its-kind attempt, bestselling author Sanjeev Sanyal tells the history of this significant region, which stretches across East Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent to South East Asia and Australia. He narrates a fascinating tale about the earliest human migrations out of Africa and the great cities of Angkor and Vijayanagar; medieval Arab empires and Chinese 'treasure fleets'; the rivalries of European colonial powers and a new dawn.

Sanjeev explores remote archaeological sites, ancient inscriptions, maritime trading networks and half-forgotten oral histories, to make exciting revelations. In his inimitable style, he draws upon existing and new evidence to challenge well-established claims about famous historical characters and the flow of history. Adventurers, merchants, explorers, monks, swashbuckling pirates, revolutionaries and warrior princesses populate this colourful and multifaceted narrative.

The Ocean of Churn takes the reader on an amazing journey through medieval geopolitics and eyewitness accounts of long-lost cities to the latest genetic discoveries about human origins, bringing alive a region that has defined civilization from the very beginning.
