Journey with Baul will offer a glimpse of a deep immersion in the present through Baul poetry, along with the instruments - Ektara, Duggi and Ghunguru. And a chance, to break the separation between audience and performer.

On a meandering path

In this labyrinth of life

Walks the Mad One.

Singing and dancing,

In the joy of the Beloved.

What does it mean to be fully alive in mind, body, emotion and spirit?

What does a marriage of the material and spiritual look like?

What happens when all people, places and events become a mirror for our own consciousness?

Baul tackles these questions and more with characteristic lightness and humour.

Please come with your curiosity and presence, joy and pain, intentions and questions that we can together address through songs and experiences.

About Baul

Baul is an oral tradition, of which we find the oldest traces in about the 10th Cent. CE. It is a syncretic tradition that melds together Buddhist, Sufi and Hindu thoughts and practices. The word Baul means the Mad one, who is lost in the love of the Divine. In their quest for Love, humanity and compassion, Baul have surpassed common social boundaries and often sing of life beyond caste, religion, family and pride.

The radical yet humorous approach of the Baul is as essential and relevant today as it has been in the centuries past, using music and poetry to break down the walls of hatred and judgment.

About Arpita

Arpita has been immersed in learning Baul since 2015 from Parvathy Baul, Kanai Das Baul, Deb Das Baul, Lokkhon Das Baul and others. She has traveled back and forth from Bangalore to learn the Baul philosophy, songs, movements, instruments and the Bengali language. She has sung Baul both in India and abroad.

Her understanding of the tradition is strengthened by her degrees in Ancient Indian Culture, the Study of Religions, Sanskrit and Pali from St. Xaviers College, Mumbai University and SOAS, London
