An Introductory & Interactive Session on Songwriting, Performance & Independent Music
A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. Sex. But then, as you get to know the person, that's the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath. It's the combination of the two, that makes it magical."
That's from Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant from the film "Music and Lyrics". Not really the line to be quoted here, in order to explain songwriting but music is somewhat like that. It may not be a person, it might be a situation, a place, people, a moment, a feeling, and so on. And not just the aesthetic but also the congruence of things, history, and the likes.
When you travel from pure sciences to social sciences and then to literature and art, quantifiable parameters become less structured, more and more. Most of the rules are a post-analysis of works of art. It is how languages were born. An intrinsic need to communicate. It's how Shakespeare was ahead of his time. What's stan? No clue.
By analyzing the existing trends and trajectories of how songwriting and performance and building up of a song in its raw state may take place, one can equip oneself with ways to move ahead from a focal/starting point like a line of melody or a few words stringed together evoking a feeling, like one does while observing nature and build a song out of it. The expressions of those emotions culminate into honest songwriting.
