Mohiniyattam is the very epitome of ‘lasya’ and is known for its gentle and fluidic movements that reflect the landscape of Kerala, the land of its birth. The lecture demonstration will be an informative session about the art form of Mohiniyattam, its nature, history and will throw light on a little bit of technique. This will be coupled with a short performance to give the viewers a true understanding and experience of the art form itself.
Malavika Menon is a Mohiniyattam artiste and senior disciple of Guru Smt. Vinitha Nedungadi, from Kerala. A trained dancer in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam since the age of four, Malavika found her true calling in Mohiniyattam and followed her passion further. She is a Doordarshan graded and empaneled artiste with the ICCR, and has recently received the Senior Scholarship in Mohiniyattam from the Ministry of Culture for advance research and training.
Although professionally qualified as a lawyer, her undying love for dance and more specifically, Mohiniyattam has led her to take it up as a full-time profession. She is also a Young India Fellow in Liberal Arts from Ashoka University. She has performed at several prestigious stages, some of which include the Kottakkal Vishwambhara Festival, Sangam Festival in Orissa, Swathi Festival, Puthur Dance and Music Festival, Utsavam IKKF in Dubai, Palakkad Kathakali Trust, Rasoham Festival in Bangalore, etc.
Malavika is an artist who strongly believes in the power of classical art forms to communicate deeply with people. Art is ultimately an organic creation that arises out of human emotion and experiences. Hence, Mohiniyattam and its practice is also a very intimate, transformative and spiritual journey for her. She wishes to have soulful conversations through the medium of this art form with her audience and to impart this extremely graceful and fluidic art form with the younger generation and other art enthusiasts.
