The journey towards Mental Health & Well-being is often seen as a lonely road – one where a person has to quietly “battle their demons”. However, researchers have consistently shown that by introducing adequate social support, this journey can not only be a lot easier but also more fruitful in terms of stabilisation and recovery.
Mental Health issues have a way of affecting not only those suffering, but also those around them. The parents, partners or children have to take on additional physical, emotional and even financial responsibilities. Similarly, friends or colleagues provide that do provide emotional or professional support from time to time, might not always be able to. And even though one might take on these responsibilities out of genuine love, care and concern for the individual, it might still cause significant distress in their life.
Social support in any form, from family, friends and even colleagues, can go a long way in helping anyone directly or indirectly affected by Mental Health issues.
Peer Support Groups
A Peer Support Group allows individuals with a history of distress to come together, discuss and learn from their shared experiences. Individuals can find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in their suffering. Success stories shared often act as a lighthouse for others to keep up with their process of recovery.
Even individuals who do not suffer from a condition themselves, but might know someone who does, can use these groups to gain a better understanding of the condition and pick up healthy ways in which they can be there for their loved ones.
You are not alone!
If you are one of the 13% of Bangalore’s population the Buddy Circle can help you get in touch with others who may be facing the same challenges as you in their Mental Health journey. Here, you can find the support and belonging that you long for, and find a community that understands your experiences and hardships without judgement or prejudice.
What? When? Where?
The “Buddy Circle” is a peer support group initiative by Heart It Out. We aim to bring together individuals living with mental illnesses to share experiences, insights and tools to help each other gather more strength through their journey.
The group, facilitated by a Mental Health professional, meets twice a month to share their journey, articulate their life experiences and tools and tips that have helped them gain clarity and balance. Over the course of six meetings, we envision a community that stands for compassion, unconditional support and each other.
