About the event:
‘Chinnadevi: The Elusive Dancer’, is a love story set in the 15th century, in the Vijayanagara Empire. Through Bharatanatyam and dramatized reading, the trials faced by the lovers, Chinnadevi, the dancer and Krishna Deva Raya, the emperor of Vijayanagara, will be brought out by dancers Dr Chamu Kuppuswamy, Mathangi Keshavan and Lianne Oosterbaan and storyteller Aparna Jaishankar. Dr Chamu Kuppuswamy and Mathangi Keshavan have conceived and choreographed this performance.
About the performers:
Dr Chamundeeswari Kuppuswamy is a Bharathanatyam dancer and choreographer based in London, UK.. A student of the abinaya exponent Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, Chamu presents high quality and excellent work that combines dance, literature and philosophy.
Mathangi Keshavan is a third generation Bharathanatyam artist having learnt from her mother Guru Gayathri Keshavan. Her portfolio includes several dance productions with her ancestral academy featured in 'London Is Open', and has worked with establishments such as Akademi, Natyasri, Pagrav and Nritarutya. Her highly acclaimed and recent performances include 'Timeless Traditions', ‘East meets West’. Apart from Bharathanatyam, Mathangi is also trained in Kathak and has explored contemporary dance with Martha Graham in New York.
Lianne Oosterbaan, an anthropologist with an interest in Indian studies, currently a PhD student, trained in classical ballet and started learning Bharatanatyam in 2018. Lianne was part of the script writing and production team of the novel adaptation of ‘East Meets West’, premiered in London in summer 2018.
Aparna Jaishankar left the hustle and bustle of corporate HR life to pursue a career in the world of Arts. Her love for stories in all forms and her penchant for drama in general, drew her to the world of Storytelling and Theatre. Her belief in the power of stories led her to found her banner ‘kAhini – What’s your story?’.
