An introduction to Flamenco Duration = 6 hours The first 2 hours will be covered before the performance. Students will learn the palmas for the 12 beat compas . A composition using this, will be performed by the band. Introduction to body postures, exposure to technical and common words and terms used in Flamenco. The session will focus on various arm movements and will be introduced to simple footwork combinations, using a simple 4 - beat compas. 4 hours: The following the day, we will learn more footwork patterns and combine arm and feet movements. Introduction to simple spins in Flamenco. Finally students will learn a simple Tangos choreography set to a popular , contemporary Flamenco music. Archana Kumar is an independent experimental performance artist, driven by everything that she experiences around her, prefers to speak of the uncomfortable truths. As a woman performer, her solo projects reflect issues related with the gender crisis, inequalities of genders and their biases. They are bold, evocative and radical. During her 10 year residence in USA, she underwent extensive training in modern dance techniques, Butoh and improvisation. She is primarily trained in Kathak which she continues to teach and use as a vehicle to further understand the physical body, to develop control, discipline and balance. She led a premier Kathak school in Seattle, was adjunct faculty at Cornish College of Arts & Northwestern University, Evanston. She received the SPANDANA Award in 2011, Karnataka, India for her exceptional contribution towards spreading the knowledge of Kathak amongst the youth. Her works have travelled around USA, Canada, Japan, China and Indonesia. Her current research and fascination is understanding children and creating novel methods to deconstruct movements and accommodate dance, music and theatre in education at the grass roots level. She owes much of her Theatre experience to Hiroshi Ohashi, Tokyo working closely with him since 2005.Currently she has started teaching and introducing Flamenco to the Bangalore people through workshops, classes and performances with her new band- Alemari.
