You're not aware of it, but you use a lot of unnecessary effort as you move through your day even in ordinary actions like sitting, standing and walking. This might seem relatively harmless as long as youre thinking about these routine movements, but when you use the same tension in more complex actions like working at the computer, for instance, you can damage yourself quite badly.
The Alexander Technique is a simple and elegant discipline that teaches you to become aware of this extra tension and let go of it. Your movements and actions become easier and less stressful; theres a sense of greater calmness and ease in your day. Its not in itself a medical treatment, but it often has therapeutic benefits like improved sleep and digestion and lower blood pressure and stress levels. It can be applied in many fields like computer work, performance of all kind, and sport and athletics.
The Alexander Technique introductory is a chance to explore this process. If youre unaware of a lot of the tension that you carry; you think youre relaxed when youre actually not. The Introductory session will help you go beyond this unconscious layer of tension and see what its like to move without it.
About Padmini Menon:
Im Padmini Menon and I teach the Alexander Technique in Bangalore. To the best of my knowledge, Im the only trained resident Alexander teacher in India.
I started my career as a teacher of English at Rishi Valley in Madanapalle, and later at the Valley School in Bangalore.
In 2004 my fascination with the Alexander Technique, which Id come across many years earlier, resurfaced and I went off to the UK to train as an Alexander Technique teacher.
I returned in 2008 after 3 years at the Brighton Alexander Technique College. I now teach the Technique in Bangalore, working with people from all walks of life, and all age groups. Some come for lessons because of problems like RSI, chronic back, neck or shoulder pain. Others are performers who want to either deal with a problem, or learn how to perform with greater ease and power. Still others come simply because they want to develop a greater sense of wellbeing.
I've conducted classes and workshops in the Alexander Technique in Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Ive also taught an Alexander Technique Introductory course to the second year students at the National School of Drama, Delhi.
