Small Steps Adventures Night Trek and Camping at Kalavantin Durg

Kalavantin Durg is located near Panvel Taluka of Raigad District. It is 65 kms and 110 kms away from Mumbai & Pune respectively. Trek to Kalavantin is moreover of a Jungle Trail of around 2 hours where you reach Prabal Machi village. This Machi is the base of Kalavantin and Prabalgad where you can camp and stay overnight.

From Prabal Machi, trek to Kalavantin is of a Steep Jungle trail and later Stone Carved Steps to reach top. One must be careful while climbing those steps as there are no railings to support. Once you reach the top, you will get 360-degree view. You can view Matheran range, Vikatgad, Irshalgad, Prabalgad, Chanderi, Nakhind, Karnala and other nearby forts. If the weather is clear you can also test your eye to identify the places of Navi Mumbai.


Day 1:

We are Waiting for you

Meet at Panvel Railway Station at 6:30 pm. We will travel in a transfer vehicle to Thakurwadi base village of Kalavantin Durg.

Prabal Machi - Our Campsite

We will reach the Thakurwadi around 7:30 pm. After a fun Introduction Round we will start the trek to Prabal Machi where we will set up our camp for the night.

Delicious Dinner

We will reach Prabal Machi around 9 pm. Freshen up and Relax for a while. Feast on the delicacies of Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian dishes freshly cooked by the villagers.

Camping Session and Fun Games

Post Dinner, we will start our camping session with various fun games such as Antakshari, Mis-match and Traffic jam. Dont forget to gaze at the starry sky before dozing off.

Day 2

Good Morning Folks

Wake up around 5:30 am. Freshen up and start the trek to Kalavantin Durg around 6 am to enjoy the morning view.

Yay, we are here

Reach Kalavantin Top around 7:15 am. Enjoy the 360-degree view from the top and test your eye to recognize the nearby forts namely Prabalgad, Karnala, Matheran Range, Peb Fort and many more. We will start the descend around 8:15 am.

Breakfast Delight

We will reach Prabal Machi around 9:15 am. Relax and freshen up. Fill your stomach with hot delicious breakfast and Masala Tea. We will start the descend to Thakurwadi around 10 am.

What an Amazing Experience

We will reach base village around 11 am where we will travel in our transfer vehicle to reach Panvel Railway Station. Don't forget to share your experience and feedback about the event before bidding adieu. 

Things to Carry:

  • At least 2 ltrs of drinking water
  • Photo ID card
  • Good trekking or sport shoes (Compulsory)
  • Some ready to eat food (plum cakes, biscuits)
  • Electral/Tang powder/Glucose-D/salt
  • Cap, camera, mobiles phones, socks, extra pairs of clothes (if required)
  • Any personal medicine

2. Trek/camp leader's decision will be final and binding.
3. Small Steps reserves all the right to change/deviate/cancel the plans without prior notice.
4. Telephonic confirmation is mandatory; if unable to contact us then send a text message and we will call you back.
6. Please avoid wearing Gold and other jewelry.
7. Please do not carry handbags or Jholas or Sling bags on treks.

Really loved this trek.. while going in , the uphill task is a little daunting.

The woods are real thick at some places and ambiance is quite refreshing.

The climb is difficult at some places as there are not well constructed steps.

However, some parts up the fort are steep and takes a challenging climb.

The paths are streams of either bogs or mossy rocks -- each having their own fun hazards.

But that is what keeps the trek natural and exciting.

There are pretty white crabs in the stream-paths -- very interesting.

The trip to top was awesome.

The strong breeze blowing at the top quickly dries off the sweat from the climb too.

This was the week of onslaught of the monsoon, so it was amazing warm monsoon rain and as we got closer there was also mist and fog.

It was green and wet all over.

The view of the surrounding countryside from the top is simply breathtaking. Well worth the climb up.

The fort is in ruins and makes a beautiful place for pictures..

The greenery just added to the awesomeness. the view from top is gorgeous..

There is nothing much to see atop the fort except some water cisterns and the thumbs up point.

The shape of the hill-top is fascinating. It replicates your mood giving you a thumbs up when you finish a couple of tough climbs,

but also taking the opportunity of showing a ""up yours"" when you're struggling.

From the top you can really appreciate the control this fort would have given the incumbent in seasons like this.

Really loved the time spent on top.

There is nothing much to see at the top of the fort except the surroundings.

However, we were treated to a spectacular view from the top.

It indeed feels great once we have reached the top.

But the moment we reached the top, clouds began moving in and all of a sudden it just started pouring..

The sudden change was indeed welcome.

But due to the rains, the path down had become super slippery..

Coming down was difficult in the bad patches due to steepness of the rocky roads.

My research had dismissed the climb as an ""easy"" one: I can attest that in the monsoon rain and fog it is definitely close to the top rating on difficulty.

But this shouldn't daunt you since you're likely to be surrounded

by singing dancing dare-devil fellow trekkers in this season.

There is a small bird sanctuary just at the base.

We were treated to the sights of peacocks and a few little rabbits.

All is well that ends well. It was worth the while, and the victory of surmounting the difficult is always sweet.

Overall Experience was amazing...Simply wow... cannot get over with the great experience...totally spellbound by the beauty of the place...

never felt so close to nature especially after the concrete jungle that is Mumbai

The initial climb is a tough one, the middle is a ridge -- a reward with great views.

The climb is steep but on the bright side very short ( barely 3 kms).

However I feel that this trek does offer a great break from busy and polluted citylife.

In conclusion, trekking up Karnala is a fun and enriching experience.

Thanks to SSA for this beautiful memorable experience... Team leaders were very polite and helpful...The food was provided just like ghar ka khana... Fellow trekkers were so good and friendly... really enjoyed...Once again Thank you SSA....
