Presenting an artist who has mastered the charcoal medium with unmatched brilliance and created beautiful figurative artworks, which have an element of the real & surreal.

The journey...

A post graduate in commerce, Gautam Patole chose to shift from being a photojournalist to an artist in 2009. His first love in arts was ceramic painting; but it was the charcoal medium that he managed to tame, transporting us to the bygone era of black & white. Gautam Patole's works are mostly figurative.

"A tint of colour adds beauty to the charcoal. I paint to give happiness to the viewers. The basic underlying goal of each of my work is to give joy to those who see my work," says the Artist.

The Artist's philosophy behind life & painting is based on what the renowned American Essayist & Poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) says,

“To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. “

Whilst one can describe the collection as figurative, the spectrum is broad as it covers traditional & sensual, feminine grace in its full essence, the innocence of children, the wisdom of the monks & also the animal kingdom. Each artwork is epic and narrates a story of its own.

Gautam Patole & his art have a persona and presence that engages you. The visual of each artwork evokes infinite beauty & substance. The Artist's strokes are powerful and speak in more ways than one. This is one time when the shades of black & white communicate in a multi-dimensional way and the viewer is quite simply in awe of each masterpiece.

This collection has the bearings of being the highlight, centre piece holding fort in your homes. Gautam's art has been appreciated & been part of the personal collection of various Bollywood stars to the likes of Amitabh Bachan, Anupam Kher, Sushmita Sen, Raageshwari Loomba, Riteish Deshmukh, Pooja Bedi, among others.

Gautam himself has been instrumental to promote many deserving Artists.

The Royal Opera House Mumbai (ROHM) is widely touted as Mumbais Cultural Crown Jewel and Indias only surviving Opera House. The original idea for the space was conceived of in 1908, inaugurated in 1911 by King George V, and eventually completed in 1916. The design incorporated a blend of European and Indian detailing. The space became a cinema in later years before falling into disrepair and shutting by the 1990s. Fittingly, the space has been owned by the Royal Family of Gondal since 1952 and was eventually restored by conservation architect, Abha Narain Lambah under the leadership of the current Maharaja of Gondal, Shri Jyotendrasinhji. The Royal Opera House Mumbai, now one of the last remaining Baroque structures in the city, reopened after 23 years in October 2016. The building was included on the 2012 World Monuments Watch to raise awareness about its history and significance, and support preservation efforts. The restored facilities feature a 574-seater 3-level auditorium with an orchestra pit and state of the art technological upgradations, including acoustics, stagecraft, lighting and air-conditioning, alongside retaining the old world charm of the proscenium stage, the royal boxes and the magnificent regal chandeliers. Some more enhancements to the venue include a motorized screen, co-axial ceiling speaker system, Four-zone volume control and all round wifi access. Today, it stands as a key performance and creative hub in the citys cultural landscape, while being a premier heritage landmark. Facebook: www.facebook.com/royaloperahousemumbai/

I had organized a program at Wilson College that was attended by 5,000-7,000 students. The Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University Shri Sanjay Deshmukh was very impressed & said that he would get Sir J.J. School of Art to collaborate and work closely with Cosmic Heart Gallery. At Cosmic Heart we believe in providing a platform for talent, so the synergies are perfect. I am very excited to host this show at the Gallery, says Jalpa H Vithalani, Creative Head & Director, Cosmic Heart Gallery.

Sir J J School of Art is one of Indias oldest and most respected of art institutions built on an impeccable heritage and renowned for the quality of its teaching excellence and innovation work.

It is one of the pioneering institutes of Fine Art education in India, since its establishment in 1878 in the current campus with generous donation from Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, under the British administration. The School, today, stands in the heritage building with departments of drawing and painting, sculpture and modeling, arts and crafts including ceramics, interior decoration, metal work and textiles.

Sir J J School of Arts has given India some of its revolutionary artists making a global impact on art like Vasudev Gaitonde, Akbar Padamsee, Tyeb Mehta, Jeram Patel, Prabhakar Barve, Prabhakar Kolte among others. Even in contemporary Indian art scenario, J.J. continues to contribute with artists like Dilip Ranade, Atul Dodiya, Sunil Gavade, Jitish Kallat, and many more.

The history of Sir J.J. School of Arts has been engraved by many successful artists, who have not only been the reflections of the social times, but also made substantial contribution in the contemporary Indian Art, beginning with academic style of painting.

Having strong legacies of European as well as Indian art techniques, the students get the milieu of both, in order to generate their own strong methodology of working and adapting to the changing times.

INAUGURATED BY DR NORBERT & ANITA REVAI-BERE - CONSUL GENERAL OF HUNGARY, DEAN OF CONSULAR CORPS IN MUMBAI & HIS SPOUSE.

- SHOW DATES EXTENDED UNTIL NOVEMBER 30, 2017 -

Tongji Philip Qian is a multidisciplinary artist who was born in Shanghai, China and currently lives and works around the globe. During his travels, he is particularly interested in responding to different environments and cultures by creating woodblock prints by hand.

His prints are influenced by the concept of the element of chance and he is devoted to finding chance now and here.

Tongji Philip Qian is the recipient of several grants and fellowships including the Annual Artist Fellowship from Schloss Plschow in Germany and the Dr. Judith Temple Grant from Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in the United States. Tongji Philip Qian received his Bachelor of Arts in art history and mathematics from Carleton College and his Advanced Certificate in studio art from New York University.

He has exhibited his works in China, Italy, the United States & two solo shows in India, at the Kriti Gallery and the Jaipur Art Summit 2016.

"Phil's work is a beautiful merger of art & craft. The woodblocks itself are stunning pieces of art. Very few people today are doing this craft & this has made it more interesting for me to host his show at my Gallery. I have watched Phil chisel & create these beautiful woodblocks & seeing this has touched me. The effort is a journey by itself. The artist's thinking had a synergy with Cosmic Heart & the final outcome is unique," says Jalpa H. Vithalani, Creative Head & Director, Cosmic Heart Gallery .

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

My understanding of woodblock prints is based on my belief that woodcuts are craft media, because some of the earliest woodblock printed books were discovered in rural regions in China where people made woodblocks to serve religious purposes such as printing sutras. Therefore, my prints promote my understanding of both chance and craft.

My current artistic practice lies in the investigation of chance-based woodblock printmaking, and my prints aim to use rigorous self-made algorithms to showcase the element of chance.

Because of the incorporation of the element of chance in my prints, I am reducing my artists role so that I can further call attention to the various possibilities of the unfathomable algorithms of chance and the cosmos.

Although the characteristic of chance implies that nothing is stable, I believe that my interest in nature and how nature can inform my artwork is a constant underlying force: I trust that humans and the universe are connected in such a subtle way that we need to remain open-minded for various signals from nature.

My practice in woodblock printmaking and my direct involvement with wood help me contemplate the position I inhabit within the grand cosmic environment. Therefore, I am attempting to understand the cosmic forces with my rendition of the element of chance, and I hope that my prints can offer some insights into the vast possibilities of the cosmic environment.

THE PROCESS

Collaborating with the element of chance in my prints means that I devote some degrees of autonomy to randomness: I intend to design a system which will guide chance to come to play on my block as I carve whereas the outcome of the design depends on chance devices such as a game dice. In my prints generally, I deconstruct the pre-existing dimensions of the block by reconstructing a new grid system based on the numbers I roll with a dice, and the numbers denominate how many cellular units the new row/column now entails. Subsequently, I define the coordination between the rolled number and the accompanying carving action. And I repeat and run numerous iterations until I reach the end of my algorithm. Lastly, I print. In this way, chance determines my carving on the block, and I am basically a craftsman following my systems.

Further, in some of my prints, I also emphasize the materiality of woodblock printmaking by printing the same block twice (I print a block once, re-ink it and print it again after turning it 180 degrees). As a result, the print will embody diagonal symmetrythe original characteristics of the woodblock and the paper (woodgrains on the block and fiber indentations on the paper for instance) will become more salient because they will most likely appear twice due to the symmetry. On the other hand, since I carve the block quite densely by hand, at times I fail to adhere to my system despite my efforts. But I acknowledge and embrace such accidents: I believe they contribute to a second dimension of chance which is based on inevitable human errors within craftsmanship.

In this sense, I am also inclined to print all of my prints by hand regardless of their size so that I can contribute to the foundation of crafts which is achieving refined forms like art by hand.

In short, my works highlight my interest in examining the element of chance, systematizing it, and finally freeing it to its position in nature.

At times, I feel more content to be a craftsman promoting the power of the art of chance.

IN COLLABORATION WITH KRITI GALLERY

COSMIC HEART GALLERY is proud to be an Associate Partner and support 'Nobility for Ability'. Live like royalty for a great cause...

I would like to introduce you to PIYA BAJWA, a Cancer survivor and mother of a special child. Yes, that's her identity and she is organising a fund raising event in Jaipur in the weekend of 17-18 November 2017, in support of the differently abled and women empowerment - the two causes she personifies.

PRINCESS DIYA KUMARI, The People's Princess is the Patron of this event, which coincides with the 289th Foundation day of Jaipur (18th November).

Princess Diya Kumari is the also the Ambassador for Save The Girl Child for Rajasthan State.

NOBILITY FOR ABILITY is the expression of Piya's life's journey till date, with a small attempt to make a difference to those in need, by creating awareness about select issues afflicting our society, and raising funds for lesser known organisations that are doing their bit to make the difference.

The event is conceived as a Weekend for a Cause, for some fun and relaxation, some introspection and some benevolence. It will feature a range of attractions including:

A curated walk through the Jaipur City Palace,

A Reconnective Healing session by Jalpa H Vithalani, Nobility for Ability, Promo Video link - https://youtu.be/ef6dMb0udXE for Reconnective Healing.

A champagne brunch at the Rajasthan Polo Ground.

An exhibition polo match between the Jaipur Royals led by Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur against the team of Chantilly Polo Club, France.

A Women of Substance Style on Turf couture celebrating the woman, presented by Charu Parashar in association with Petal Foundation.

Culminating with the Expressions of Jaipur Gala Evening at the 'Jaipur City Palace' on 18th November, 2017 featuring a Rohit Bal fashion show and a silent auction by Arushi Arts.

Experience the Indian culture with the Royal family of Jaipur.
