Sham Valley trek is not a difficult trek, convenient for easy hiker groups which appeals to a lot of people who look forward to a more sight-seeing style trek as opposed to a good workout. There are many villages and monasteries on this trek to visit and is the only trek that can be done throughout the year, as there are no high mountain passes to navigate and battle the elements with. The beauty of this trek is that it takes us through many small apricot orchard villages where we can interact with the locals and share in their customs.

Day 01: Welcome to the Himalayas – Delhi – Leh arrival After an exciting flight from Delhi to Leh, with stunning views of the Himalayan mountain ranges, you will be received at Kushok Bakula Rinpochey airport in Leh and take you to your hotel to settle in for the night. Here it is imperative that we take one full day of rest to acclimatise to the high altitude. Later in the evening we take a walk around Leh Town followed by an overnight stay at a local guest house.
Day 02: From city living, to country living – Leh – Likir – Yangthang (4 – 5 hours) We start the day early in the morning from Leh and drive 2 hours to Likir following the Indus River. After visiting the famous Likir monastery we begin our trek from a point near the monastery. The trail goes steadily upwards till Chagatse La at 3630m. Across the pass is the village of Yangthang where we will spend the night at a home stay.
Day 03: Day of hiking and connecting with nature – Yangthang – Hemis Shukpachan Via Ri-zong (3 – 4 hours) This is the day when we walk alongside the river and trees amidst the gorge to the Rizong monas-tery. After visiting the Gompa, we ascend to the Shushut pass located at 4000m. From here we have a view of Hemis Shukpachan and its surrounding peaks. An easy descent towards our camp at Hemis Shukpachan takes a couple of hours.It is one of the major villages of Sham, and the name of the village is derived from the conifers (shukpa= cedar or juniper). We spend the night at a home stay.
Day 04: Traversing desert landscapes Hemis – Shukpachan – Tingmosgam (4 hours) From Hemis Shukpachan we transition to flat terrain that passes alongside the Chortens, the stupas found in that region. A steep descent will lead us to a path that climbs steadily along the slope to-wards the Mebtak La 3720 m.
After taking a short rest and enjoying the view, we go down to the village of Ang. From Ang, we head south on a dusty jeep road to the village of Tingmosgam, well famed for its monastery, its apri-cots, apples, nuts and beautiful houses is perhaps the most affluent village in the Sham valley. Overnight at a home stay.
Day 05: Meeting with the Indus River and its inhabitants – Tingmosgam – Lamayuru – Alchi – Leh (150 kms, 5 – 6 hours) We leave in the morning and drive towards mesmerising moon like landscapes and the Lamayuru monastery. En route we visit the Alchi monastery, known for its wall paintings. We follow the river Indus till Khalsi, where we cross the Indus and drive further to reach Lamayuru. Take a village walk and get down to the river Indus to spend some quiet time here. Reach Leh by evening. Overnight stay at a guest house.
Day 06: Homeward bound – Leh to Delhi departure Early morning a vehicle will take you to the airport to catch your flight back to Delhi.
