One of the marvels of 20th-century science is the transition from analogue to digital data. This ability to interconvert the two types of data is probably the prime engine of the information age. In this workshop, you can learn the process of converting sound into electrical signals. This is a fundamental step in digitization of analogue sound.

Did you know you can build a basic mic (microphone) out of an empty matchbox?

In this NEW workshop from Young-Scientist.in, you can learn how to do just that! You can create sounds and the microphone will electronically transmit the signal through the wires, which you can hear using a headphone/earphone.

Carry Items:

  • 9V Battery (1)
  • 2-mm Pencil lead (10)
  • Earphones/Headphones (1)
  • Empty Matchbox (1)

Learn the science behind the working of a mic (microphone). You can even take it to your school and impress your science teacher!

Workshop Objectives:

+ Build your own matchbox microphone and take it home!
+ Learn the basics of sound & transducers. (Transducer is a device that converts one form of energy to another)
+ Understand the first step in the digitization of sound.
+ Learn the basics of electrical engineering and electronics.
+ Gain hands-on experience.

Why Do-It-Yourself (DIY)?

Why Do-It-Yourself (DIY)?

"Give your son a fish, he will eat today. Teach him how to fish, he will eat every day" is a proverb that encapsulates the spirit of Do-It-Yourself and this workshop. We want to provide your child with the confidence and skills to materialise what they imagine- starting from simple models. If a child feels empowered, he or she will grow to be an independent and self-sufficient person.
