Venue - IITM-Research Park is NOT inside the IIT Madras campus.

Eligibility: Class V & above

In this NEW workshop from Young-Scientist, we will deal with an invisible and universal force: Gravitation. We will be conducting an experiment using sensors to measure the acceleration due to gravity. This acceleration is what every falling object experiences, irrespective of its mass. This will be a rigorous workshop with data collection and analysis.

We will also discuss briefly the theory of general relativity by Einstein using a simple demonstration.

There will be other fun experiments and activities for the kids to gain an intuitive understanding of gravity and its properties.

Tentative List of Experiments

  • Galileo's free fall
  • Curvature of space-time
  • Acceleration due to gravity.

 Workshop Objective

  • Definitions of acceleration and force
  • infer from Galileo's experiment
  • Properties of acceleration due to gravity
  • Understand why the planets don't fall into the sun
  • Intuitive understanding of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity

An object will be dropped from rest to fall a known distance. We will use a tactile sensor interfaced with a stopwatch to measure the time taken. Assuming constant acceleration, we'll use the appropriate equation of motion to calculate the

Despite the use of electronic sensors, this method is straightforward and simpler than the typical pendulum method employed in schools.
