"For a petite five-foot something, Kapila Venu makes for a petrifying Narasimha. She sits perched on a stool, serving Hiranyakashapu a bloody comeuppance, gutting him and revelling in his entrails and bones. The tongue rolled back, eyes unfocused, the scene is so rivetingly gory that you cant look, cant look away." - Malini Nair in Open Magazine.

On Sat, 7 Oct, Kapila becomes Chitrangada, Tagore's warrior princess of myriad character. Do come!

Kapila Venu is doing something extraordinary - over about 30 to 40 performances, she and her troupe from Natanakairali are performing Sreekrishnacharitham (life-story of Lord Krishna) in continuity in various temples across Kerala where Nangiarkoothu was traditionally performed.

Check out the details on https://www.facebook.com/Nangiar-Koothu-Sampoornam-256935968158439/

Hats off, Kapila Venu! And thanks for agreeing to give Bangalore a show in the midst of this.

Bhoomija presents Kapila Venu on Sat, 7 Oct in MLR JP Nagar. Tickets on: https://in.bookmyshow.com/concerts/for-performing-arts-bhoomija-tickets
In brief, this project aims at the performance of the complete, unedited presentation of Sreekrishnacharitham (life-story of Lord Krishna) Nangiar Koothu in continuity in various temples of Kerala by Kapila Venu. There will be atleast two consecutive performances in each temple.

It can take between 30 - 40 performances to complete the entire series. The performances will happen in temples where Nangiar Koothu used to traditionally be performed as part of temple rituals. The whole series will be chronicled and video documented.

Nangiar Koothu is the solo narrative performance style of the Nangiar (female performer of Kutiyattam theatre).

About Kutiyattam/Koodiyattam

Kutiyattam is one of the oldest surviving theatre traditions of the world with an unbroken lineage of over 2000 years. It was traditionally practiced in the temple theatres known as Koothambalams of Kerala, South India, by members of the Chakyar, Nangiar and Nambiar communities.

In Kutiyattam, dramatic texts written in the Sanskrit language are performed using a highly sophisticated, codified and complex theatre language best known for the art of nethrabhinaya (acting with and through the eyes) and hasthabhinaya (gestural language).

Actors and musicians undergo several years of rigorous basic training. In 2001, Koodiyattam was recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity

About Nangiar Koothu

A unique feature of Kutiyattam is that both female and male performers performed together unlike many other theatre traditions of the world like Noh, Kabuki and Peking Opera.

Nangiar Koothu, an artform unique to the female performers of Kutiyattam who are known as Nangiar, is a solo narrative acting style where an actress enacts episodes from the life of Lord Krishna based on 217 Sanskrit slokas compiled from various sources including Bhagavatham and Gita Govindam.

Though it continued as a temple ritual in a few temples in Kerala, Nangiar Koothu had almost completely disappeared by the eighties.

Our Guru, Guru Ammannur Madhava Chakyar, the great Kutiyattam legend played a key role in the revival of Nangiar Koothu, especially in re-instating the artistic and aesthetic scope of the art form that had been reduced to a mere ritual.

He re-wrote the acting manual enhancing it with ample scope for abhinaya and re-choreographed many episodes with enhanced theatricality.

It must be noted that Guru Ammannurs style of abhinaya is unique because of the advanced training in Rasavayu (emotion and breath) that he received from the great actor-trainer Bhagavathar Kunjunni Thampuran at Kodungalloor Kalari (actor training centre at the Kodungalloor royal family).

Kapila Venu

Kapila venu is one of the foremost disciples of the legendary Kutiyattam maestro Late Guru (Padmabhooshan) Ammannur Madhava Chakyar. She is the daughter and student of G Venu, a renowned actor-trainer, Koodiyattam performer and traditional arts researcher and Nirmala Paniker, a highly respected Mohiniyattam teacher and scholar. she has also undergone rigorous training under G Venu and Usha Nangiar. She is an accomplished and celebrated exponent of Nangiar Koothu and Kutiyattam

A widely travelled artiste, she has interacted with distinguished theatre personalities and performed for audiences all over the world. This has made her aware of the need for thinking differently about traditional yet contemporary art forms.

She constantly explores possibilities of how to make traditional performances relevant for todays audiences
