"Where does our mind go, when we fall asleep? Can dreams weave a layer of parallel existence? Can there be another reality beyond all that we touch, see or feel?

It is a normal day for Manisha. She wakes up from sleep and goes to work. On her way back home, she walks into a coffee shop. The cafe is empty but for an old man behind the counter and another man at a corner table. Later in the night, this man comes back to her in her sleep and then, every night thereafter. A new journey begins and a transcendence. A story weaves itself around a life unfulfilled and a destiny, beautiful and fated.

But... where does this journey lead her to? Will Manisha be able to find her way through these parallel worlds?"

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

An alumnus of Indian Statistical Institute, Sinjini Sengupta is an erstwhile Actuary converted into an award winning writer, columnist and public speaker. She writes in several literary genres ranging from social columns to poetry, novels to screenplays, stories to film/ book reviews. LAUNCH OF BOOK OF POETRY "Bird of the Indian Subconctinent" by Subhashini Kaligotla along with Jeet Thayil as the chief guest.

Jan 12, Friday: 7PM onwards

About the book:

Bird of the Indian Subcontinent is Subhashini Kaligotlas first poetry collection. The debut volume was selected by poet Arundhathi Subramaniam for The (Great) Indian Poetry Collectives second annual Emerging Poets Prize. The book is a testament to the Collectives mission of discovering and nurturing the best new poets coming out of India and the diaspora. "These are poems of precision, strength, and radiant surprise," says Subramaniam, while poet-novelist Jeet Thayil finds that the poets unerring eye alights on art and men and gods alike.

The poems chart the passage of a metamorphosing self through euphoria, despair, defiance, equanimity, grief, and loneliness. Appropriating freely from diverse poetic sources, the writer gives voice to a polyglot emotional range. Sanskrit poetics, Jazz lyrics, ekphrasis, the locutions of Indias poet-saints, and the Anglo-American writing tradition all find place here. And the books chorus of figuresfrom Christ to Krishna to Caravaggiomoves the reader between present and past, myth and history, bird and human, and across cities and continents.

About the poet:

Subhashini Kaligotla is a poet and architectural historian of medieval India. Her early education and training were in engineering. She left a career in technology to pursue first an MFA in poetry and then a PhD in art history, earning both degrees from Columbia University. She has published in such journals as The Caravan, diode, LUMINA, New England Review, and The Literary Review. Anthology appearances include various collections of Indian and diaspora poetry, most notably Penguin Indias 60 Indian Poets and the Bloodaxe Book of Contemporary Indian Poets.

Subhashini joins the faculty at Yale University in September 2018 as Assistant Professor of South Asian Art.

MAKE & TAKE HOME TWO MASKS!

The joy of making mask has been a cultural practice for humanity since the time of animism. The tradition of Cherial Art form began with scroll painting. Cherial Scroll Painting is a stylized version of Nakashi art, rich in the local motifs peculiar to Telangana. Like most other traditional painting forms this was used for story telling. Particularly the smaller intricate stories from the epics would be illustrated in the Cherial scrolls. Cherial scroll painting made way to mask making where a few characters from the scrolls were converted into masks. Tiger, cow, neutral characters like that of

man, woman, bandit etc. were made into masks, which were used to entertain the children and decorate houses with. The style and motifs used in scroll are replicated on the mask and are painted

with the same colors.

This workshop will be a platform where you can bring out your hidden facets on a tactile form as creative expression. Participants can watch and interact with the Cherial Artist the traditional practitioners of Cherial mask making of Telangana.
