"Chuski Natak Ki" is an Event conducted by our group, "Theatre On Your Own" which plans to read all classic plays in a dramatic manner, discuss about the work of the renowned playwrights, figure out the craft used in the great plays. It all happens over a chuski of tea and some snacks. The target audience for the event is everyone who appreciates theatre and literature and everyone who like us gets inspired by a good piece of art.
We are revisiting Vijay Tendulkar's "Sakharam Binder" this time incorporating a theme based staged reading. We would love to play with the audiences minds by using form as the storytelling will be engaging and challenging at the same time.
Synopsys of the play:
Sakharam Binder, the protagonist, thinks he has the system by the tail and he can disregard the culture & societal values as long as he is truthful. That system is the de facto enslavement of women in postcolonial India, despite the promises of democracy and modernity. Sakharam, a bookbinder, picks up other men's discarded womencastoff wives who would otherwise be homeless, destitute or murdered with impunity, and takes them in as domestic servants and sex partners. He rules his home like a tin-pot tyrant,
What he does not anticipate are the moral and emotional complications of this arrangement, which prove heartbreakingly ruinous to everyone involved
Our Take : We see Sakharam as a Thought more than a human being. You would be seeing this role being played and interpreted by multiple actors. The presentation is inspired from the story books with images and text separated out and scenography is inspired from the old biology books that has the model attached to each page. So each scene opens up new space in our presentation.
