About the painting

Imagine you are the captain of a ship sailing on the rough seas. You know land is near, but when it's night and you can't see anything, those rocks can be treacherous. One wrong move and your ship will run into the rocks and sink. Luckily, there's a lighthouse to show you the way. The lighthouse is a tower with a bright light at the top to warn and guide ships at sea.

Just few months back Dialogues JP Nagar was just a new kid in the city (after the success of Dialogues Koramangala). Within a quick span of time, it has become a frequent haunt for entrepreneurs and dreamers who have flouted societal conventions and expectations of corporate jobs. It is really heartening to see and contribute to so many individuals involved exuberantly in their crazy ideas.

Did you know, that when you are in conversation with someone, you are in fact also in conversation with yourself?

You have thoughts, feelings, body sensations, all of which are parallelly having a dialogue with you.

Lets look at an instance that could happen in a workplace.

You and colleague having a disagreement on a point which has escalated into an argument and you are waiting for your turn to respond. Have you noticed the possible internal dialogue?

It may sound something like below:

Possible Internal thoughts to self

I dont get it, why does all my conversations with this person turn into an argument, it a pain to have a meeting with him/her. What did I do to him/her? Uff!! (or) Say something, just say something. Why arent you defending yourself? (or) I know what this is about, he is making it personal that the boss recognized my efforts, he/she is jealous

Possible Internal feelings

frustration, anger, confusion, distracted, disinterested, fear

Possible Internal body sensations

sweating, increase in body temperature, shiftiness, urge to scream or cry, urge to laugh or giggle

Do you relate to the above?!! Most of us have been in this situation or witnessed something like the above happen. The above happens because our internal dialogue with ourselves affects our communication with others. Understanding this internal talk within us could mean the difference Reacting in communication versus Connecting in communication

If your goal is to Connect in communication,

Step 1 is to Observe your communication with yourself.

WaheNadhi presents Observing Communication The first step to Mindful Communication

In this workshop, we will attempt to:

Recognize the internal dialogue that happens within ourselves.

Observe if these internal dialogues are making you react in a conversation

Understand the neuroscience behind how our internal dialogues

Build an ability to notice how we are communicating with other people

Participants may sign up for the next level of the program after completing this workshop.

On WaheNadhi

WaheNadhi or the Wondrous River creates programs that are Catalysts for organizational and personal well-being, conducted through exploration and reframing Mindsets of the people involved. Facilitation of the programs are done through an eclectic mix of neuroscience, positive psychology, and well-being interventions. Archana and Seema are counsellors who co-founded WaheNadhi and facilitate the workshops.

Dialogues with Cinema (Animated Films)

"I do not make films primarily for children. I make them for the child in all of us, whether we be six or sixty." - Walt Disney

We invite you to the November episode of Dialogues with Cinema. And this month we are discussing Animated Films.

"Good cinema does more than entertain or fill seats at the cinema. It has the power to change hearts and minds and sometimes society more widely."

The idea of Dialogues with Cinema is to bring together a group of people with a taste of quality cinema. In this event the participants would discuss, share and exchange information about good movies from the selected genre. As a participant, you do not have to be a scholar in the movies, you just want to share, enjoy or build your knowledge about good movies.

It will be a 3 hour informal and engaging event where we divide time amongst participants who wish to share their favourite movie from the selected genre with the group.

Genre for November episode: Animated Films

Charges: INR 150 for regular customer, INR 100 for students . It includes one drink complimentary at Dialogues Cafe.

About the host Shivankar Jay:

Shivankar Jay formerly worked as an entertainment writer, currently works as a copywriter and is a cinema buff. He spent his summer vacations in a little island in Kerala called Vypin where, as he puts it, "he grew up at regular intervals."

Shivankar now lives in a basement, spending his waking hours watching films and talking about them. To his imaginary friends.

What could go wrong, I told myself as I painstakingly walked from my house to this newfangled Dialogues caf where you paid for time, instead of food. Little did I know that I would be looking forward to this book-club every second Saturday of the month. By Deya Bhattacharya
Deya discusses how reading helped her make friends, despite being socially awkward. She compares her friends to books she's read.
