Kufri, from the word “Kufr” meaning lake, is a tiny hill station located just 13 kms from Shimla. It was developed as a tourist destination by the British in the 19 th century and has continued to delight the tourists since. Located at 9000 ft, it is an ideal destination for trekkers and adventure sport lovers. One can trek to Manali, Shimla, Fagu and Rewalsar from here.
Hiking to the Mahasu peak, through the beautiful deodar and spruce forest, should be in every trekker and nature lover’s bucket list. On a clear day, the ranges of Badrinath and Kedarnath are visible from the Mahasu submit.
The Himalayan Nature Park, a home to about 180 bird species apart from the snow leopark, musk deer, barking deer and brown bear, is also situated in Kufri. One can even camp within the park and enjoy sightseeing. There is also an amusement park in the town with several rides, adventure sports and the world’s highest go-kart track. If you are not an adventure enthusiast, just a walk around the lanes of this quiet and beautiful town will make you fall in love with the place.
One can visit Kufri all round the year. The town can be a haven for those looking to escape the scorching heat of summer months since the weather here is pleasant during summers. In winters, one can come here to enjoy the snowfall. Kufri also hosts the annual winter sports festival every year in the month of February. The skiing competition is the main attraction of the festival. While the professionals can take part in the competition, the beginners can learn the sport around the less rugged peak of Mahasu. Kufri can thus be an ideal holiday destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers and hikers.
