While the land scape of the country is dotted with theatres that are well equipped to host the most demanding of plays and events, most of them stop their functions at that point. These theatres are a place to showcase ones artistic talents, but they are not places which inculcate or educate one in the ways of theatre. New Delhi’s Akshara Theatre strives to create a difference in the world of performance art by being a venue that not only hosts events, but also provides training to those who wish to take to the stage and dazzle the world with their artistic prowess. In action for over four decades, the Akshara Theatre has become a place of belonging for theatre lovers and for those who wish to discover the fascinating world of the performance arts.

Brief History

On the 18th of June, 1972, a family of artistically gifted individuals decide to create a place that would be a beacon for theatre in the country. Playwright, poet & director Gopal Sharman, his wife, the actress Jalabala Vaidya and their daughter Anasuya Vaidya-Shetty came together to found the Akshara Theatre. The theatre was made to give talented Indian playwrights a chance to stage their plays. The proceeds from the ticket paying audience also helped these artists to pursue their goals further, as they now had some financial security. Akshara Theatre is well-known for its production of Gopal Sharman’s Ramayana. The production was a modern interpretation of the classic Indian epic, and it was met with unanimous praise from all quarters. The play became such a sensation that the Royal Shakespeare Company commissioned it to be staged in Great Britain. Gopal Sharman’s Ramayana was also staged in illustrious venues such as Broadway in New York, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London and the National Theatre in Canada. The play brought great fame to Akshara Theatre and cemented its position as one of the most well-known theatre locations in the country.
