About Pulicat Lake

Pulicat Lake was previously called Palaverkaadu. Located along the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, the lake is situated on the Coromandal Coast in South India. Pulicat Lake is considered to be the second largest brackish water lake or lagoon in India, after Chilika Lake. The highlight of visitng this lake is the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary. The famous island of Sriharikota which is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre is what separates the lake from the Bay of Bengal. The two rivers that feed the lagoon are the Arani river at the southern tip and the Kalangi River from the northwest.

In addition to these two rivers, there are some smaller streams that empty into the Pulicat Lake. The lagoon is rich in diverse flora and fauna. The lake is rich fish diversity, most of which are marine species. This is what supports the lakes active commercial fisheries and a large and varied bird population. The Tamil Nadu part of the lagoon extends to over 60 square kilometres in area, and covers the Ponneri and Gummidipundi taluks of Thiruvallur district. It was declared as a Bird Sanctuary in October 1980.

The major attractions of the Pulicat lake are the beach, the Dutch cemetery and, particularly, the bird sanctuary. The best time to visit the lake is during the months between October to March when the weather is pleasant and cool. This is also the best time to see different types of migratory birds. Amongst all migrant birds, it is the pink flamingos which come in a large number at that time which is the main point of attraction. Other species of attractive birds that migrate to the Pulicat lake include Marsh Sandpipers, Reef Herons, Spotted Pelicans and Black-tailed Godwits. This bird sanctuary is open from morning 6 am to evening 6 pm. The famous "Flamingo Festival" is held here every year during the month of December. This 3-day bird festival includes musical programmes, food stalls and is filled with jamboree.
