Kudremukh Trek Details

Located at a distance of 330 kilometres from Bangalore, Kudremukh is the third highest peak in the state of Karnataka nestled amidst beautiful valleys and waterfalls. The peak is situated in Kudremukh National Park, a national reserve forest where you can spot amazing wildlife like sambar deer and peacocks.

The shape of the hill is similar to a horse, hence the name Kudremukh, which means horse hills in the local language. Trekking to this peak takes about two days. The trek route has many beautiful sights like waterfalls. The route is easy initially but becomes a bit difficult at the end due to few zigzag stretches.

The trek packages will mostly include transport to and fro, home-stay along with vegetarian meals. There are experienced guides to make sure you have a safe and thrilling trek.

Kudremukh Trek Experience:

Difficulty Level:

For the initial 2 to 3 kilometers, the trek is easy. After that the difficulty level is moderate
with small stretches and zigzag points along steep trails.

How to reach Kudremukh:

1. There are many KSRTC buses and private buses available. However, these are not direct buses to the trek starting point. You will get down at Kalasa and take a connecting bus to Balegal. From there you can find jeeps that take you up to the trek base (Mullodi).

2. You can also drive there. The journey of 330 kilometers can be covered in six hours.

Kudremukh Weather Conditions:

1. It is cold and very misty from October to March.

2. Chikmagalur has a monsoon from June to September with heavy rainfalls.

3. It is very hot and humid during summers making it difficult to trek the distance of 9 kilometers each way.


Kudremukh Trek Route:

1. The trek starting point is from Mullodi. This is the base.

2. From Mullodi to Lobo House the distance is around 4.5 kilometers - this portion of the trek is easy.

3. From Lobo House to Zigzag starting point, the distance is around 2.5 kilometers with moderate difficulty level.

4. From Zigzag starting point to Zigzag end point, the distance is around 1 kilometer with moderate difficulty level.

5. From Zigzag end point to the top of the hill, the distance is around 1.5 kilometers and this is where the trek gets quite difficult.

Best time for Kudremukh Trek:

The best time to visit Kudremukh is in the months of October to February. During the summer it is a bit difficult to trek 18 kilometers as the weather is hot and uncomfortable. It is advised to avoid trekking here during heavy rains as the rocks are slippery and there are a lot of leeches.

Kudremukh Trek Itinerary - Two Day Trek:

Day 0:
1. Leave Bangalore at 9.30 pm and pick up passengers at four points in the city.
2. Reach destination by 6.30 am.

Day 1:
3. Arrive at homestay in Mullodi, freshen up at the homestay and grab a bite to eat.
4. The trek begins at 9 am. All the necessary safety information will be provided.
5. Eat lunch enroute.
6. Complete the 9-kilometre trek by 2 pm.
7. Return to the homestay by 6.30 pm, in time to freshen up, start a bonfire and have dinner.

Day 2:
8. Wake up at 6.30 am, freshen up and eat breakfast by 8 am.
9. Head out to Kalasa and the Hanuman gundi waterfalls, enjoy and relax there for a while.
10. Start the journey to Bangalore.

Things To Carry:

1. Lots of water. At least 4 liters is recommended.

2. Wear good trekking shoes.

3. Carry clothes for two days, including socks and slippers or a spare pair of shoes to wear in and around the homestay.

4. Sunscreen, moisturiser and insect repellent.

5. Tissue paper.

6. A light jacket or poncho, depending on the season. 

7. A cap and sunglasses (if necessary).

8. Dry fruits and energy bars in case you need an energy boost.

9. Power bank or phone charger.  

10. Backpack.

3. Veteran guides to take you up to the summit

Photography: This trek makes for great photo opportunities - the landscape and views are beautiful and there are a variety of flora and fauna to admire and document.

Visit Hanuman Gundi Waterfalls: Located in the surrounding area of Kudremukh National Park, the waterfall is the perfect refreshing place to visit after a long trek.

Explore Kalasa: It is famously known as ‘Temple town’ located in Chikmagalur. You can head to this place before trekking or after trekking for a spiritual retreat.

Safety Measures:

1. This trek is long and difficult at some points. If you have any medical ailments, do check with your doctor if you are physically fit enough to participate.

2. Wear comfortable trekking shoes with good grip as some parts of the path can be steep or slippery.

3. There may not be pharmacies stocked with more than basic medication. Carry all the medication you will need for two days to avoid any inconveniences.

4. Get enough rest in the days before the trek as you will be walking/climbing for several hours.

5. Wear appropriate clothing for trekking.

6. Make sure you follow the guidelines given by the instructor.
