About Choe Khor Sum Ling Centre

Choe Khor Sum Ling, the Tibetan Buddhist study and meditation centre, was founded in 2003 by Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche at the request of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama. Lama Zopa Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist Scholar and associated with FPMT (Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition) founded the institution, with the sole purpose for being the centre of study and practice of Mahayana Buddhism and propagating the teachings of Nalanda Buddhist Tradition.

The meaning of the organisation, translates to "Sanctuary of the Three Turnings of the Wheels of Dharma". These three turnings of the wheel refers to three types of teachings by Shakyamuni Buddha. This ultimately comprises of all the sutras taught by Buddha. This lineage of Buddha's teaching moved to Tibet from India, as most scholars of Buddhism were Tibetans.

With the decline of Buddhism in India, the practice of Buddhism was made to sustain it's quality in Tibet. Only in 1959, with the persecution of Tibetans from Tibet, did the rich tradition of Buddhism come to India along with the thousands of Tibetans. And it slowly spread across India, which in turn quickly spread across the world. The philosophy that emphasises the cultivation of compassion embracing all living is very integral and became widely popular.

The Choe Khor Sumling, aids to an environment that easily helps people nurture and develop happiness, wisdom, peace and compassion. Offering various courses on the aspects of the Buddhist Philosophy and Meditations, this place has attracted the attention of Philosophers from all over the world. A group of accomplished and highly revered Buddhist scholars and Lamas stay here to be able to help the people who approach the centre for help. There are regular talks and programs conducted on Buddhism and teachings of Buddha.

Focusing on offering instruction and practical guidance on a rich variety of meditations, including Vipassana (analytical), Samadhi (concentration) and Metta (loving kindness) the meditation center has been a source of great inspiration to many across India. These sessions are free and open to everybody who is interested. There is also a well stocked library on Dharma books, and all major schools of Buddhism. People can read books in the library and members can loan books as well. The regular attendees to the place includes a diverse group of people from various nationalities like India, Tibet and other foreign countries.
