Mankind has wished to fly since the very first time it saw a bird take to the sky. For the sky had been the only place in the world that was denied to us. We could scale the tallest of mountains, survive the most treacherous of forests and deserts, we could swim in any sea or ocean, but we could travel in the sky. Slowly, through persistence and ingenuity, we were able to defy the odds and conquer the skies. However, travelling in the air is still not as accessible as we would like it to be. While we can go for a long drive, a hike, or a swim anytime we like, we can’t just fly as and when we wish. To be able to do so, you would need rigorous training and state-of-the art equipment. Thankfully, Bangalore’s Jakkur Aerodrome has all of those things. A piece of paradise for lovers of aviation, the Jakkur Aerodrome is an airport that also doubles as a flight school and is also the only dedicated general aviation field in Bangalore. Possessing some the best facilities in the country when it comes to flight training, Jakkur Aerodrome has become the post popular aviation spot in all of Karnataka, if not the country.
Brief History

The Jakkur Aerodrome has a royal connection when it comes to the story of its birth. The land on when the aerodrome was constructed, in the year 1948, was the Maharaja of Mysore. The Maharaja had handed over the control of the airport to the Government of Karnataka on the condition that a flight school be opened at Jakkur. This was how Jakkur’s Government Flying Training School came into being, just a year after the Aerodrome was opened. Recently, an extension project has been planned for the Jakkur Aerodrome, since a part of the runway had to be close due to the construction of a flyover. The extension will increase the runway by another 170 metres.

The Government Flying Training School is the most defining feature of the Jakkur Aerodrome. It has an aircraft maintenance facility, a hanger, library and many for features that facilitate a nurturing learning environment. The fleet at this school consists of two Cessna 152s and two Cessna 172s. Private aviation companies such as Bangalore Aerosports, Agni Aviation, Jupiter aviation Services and Confident Airlines also use the Jakkur Aerodrome as their base of operations.
Jakkur Aerodrome has popularized aviation as an activity that can be participated in by people other than commercial or military pilots. It has also given the space for several aviation companies that need the room to spread their wings.
